HELP MAY BE OUT THERE FOR FIRST TIME BUYERS. IF you’re a struggling first-time buyer, then you may soon be able to get a loan to help you raise a deposit on a newbuild home.
The government is expected to throw a lifeline to first-time buyers who are struggling to scrape together a deposit on their first property. The scheme will offer interest-free loans to Brits with incomes lower than £60,000 who are struggling to raise a deposit on their first home. But, just how far can the government make £250 million stretch. The package is designed to help 10,000 first-time buyers to purchase a new-build flat or house. The scheme, co-founded with the housebuilding industry, will offer loans worth 20% of the value of a new home, meaning those who qualify for the scheme will only have to find a 5% cash deposit themselves. The loans are likely to be interest-free for five years and will then be charged at a “belowmarket rate of interest”, probably around 1.75%. The loans must be repaid when the property is sold. Since the 2007 financial crisis, deposits for first-time buyers have risen from around 5% of purchase price to 25%, in order to qualify for the best deals.
